The distinctions we make among living creatures have to do with words and labels, not reality. We tend to anthropomorphically empathize with creatures most like us. But that is a rather selfish way to look at the world. Just because plants don't have legs and talk as we do does not make them any less living than us...or less feeling. In fact there is much evidence that plants do communicate and do feel.
