In 1095 CE, Pope Urban II ordered the first Crusade in order to reclaim the Holy Land. Muslims, Jews, heretics, pagans, and atheists were targets. The rallying cry was “Deus vult!” or “God wills it!” As an incentive, the pope promised salvation by way of indulgences. These, he promised, would reduce the amount of punishment the Bible god would exact for sins. Since everyone knew they had sinned, avoiding hell and purgatory was motivating. Additional bonuses were earthly rewards, including plunder from conquest, the forgiveness of debts, freedom from taxes, fame, property, and political power.

Yes, the holiday season is supposed to be a time of lighthearted merriment, goodwill, generosity, and religious fervor. For some it may be. For me, the tolling of the incessant Christmas songs from every public place—herding people into malls—brings but sadness as they take me back memory lane.

The December 2012 end of the world is taken dead serious by some. Others ignore it, and some ridicule it. Regardless, it creates a sense of unease in all.

Before getting too enthusiastic about predictions of the end of the world, perspective is useful. Let's set aside for the moment the self-proclaimed religious prophets (always present), Nostradamus, Mayan calendar decoders, et al. From the new, post-uniformitarian secular perspective (i.e., the world has a rich history of cataclysms), there is every reason to worry -- if worrying about things you have no control over is your forte.

Although science, insofar as it obeys reason and facts--as opposed to speculation and ideology--has done much to help us understand our world, it has its limits. It can only explore and help explain the material four dimensions, and, by means of quantum physics, tell us that there remain unknowables underneath our perceived reality such as other dimensions, timelessness, infinity, and irrationality. It most certainly does not, and cannot explain ultimate origins or purpose.

Some people spend their entire lives attempting to decipher holy books. If the Creator of the universe did indeed write such a book, it would be worthy of our utmost attention. But most people hold this belief merely because it is what they were told, not because they have proven it to themselves. For some, the only proof necessary is that the book itself claims to be the word of God.

When we are faced with problems we cannot easily solve, or that cannot be solved, we think blame. Common scapegoats are others and "God." The horrors and cruelty in the world are, in fact, the primary reason the notion of God is rejected. If a supposedly perfectly just being is capable of interceding but doesn't, that is sufficient proof for many that such a being does not exist. Religions may attempt to solve this by arguing that suffering is due to "original sin" (attributing to God the injustice of visiting the sins of parents on their children), or they may erect a theodicy (reconciling evil in the world with God's attributes by saying he went on vacation after making everything).

Even if one escapes calamity in youth, it doesn’t take but a few years beyond those salad days to see that life can be tough, if not tragic and cruel.
