After society developed beyond the malnutrition and walking in sewage stage, pandemics have not been a significant problem compared to all other causes of harm. The dangers lie in the sensationalization of pandemics to wield power, profiteering, government-imposed disruption of society, panic responses by an uninformed public, and the most deadly of all, medical interventions.

​For example, the 1918 Spanish flu is often cited as an example of what a deadly virus can do. It is reported that 500 million were infected worldwide and 50 million died.
 
But there are many factors not taken into account, such as the toxicity of aspirin being used at the time.
