Soy Protein and Health
A review of seven epidemiologic studies found “no evidence that soy is harmful for women with breast cancer.” In fact, an active ingredient in soy, called lunasin, has anti-cancer properties. It also lowered LDL and raised HDL cholesterol levels. Another finding was that soy can smooth wrinkles in the skin, specifically “crow’s feet.” A compound in soy called S-equol can attach to estrogen receptors in the body, such as those in skin cells. Researchers believe that skin aging is linked to waning estrogen levels after menopause. (See Whole Soy™, Peanut Butter Plus™, Super Flour™, Chocolate Therapy™) Prepared Foods. Cyclical Breast Pain Eased With Flaxseed A three-month study of 116 women found that consuming flaxseed significantly improved cyclical breast pain after two and three months, with no reported side effects.
